White-eared Parakeet

The White-eared Parakeet or Maroon-faced Parakeet (Pyrrhura leucotis) is a small parrot belonging to the genus Pyrrhura. As here defined, it is endemic to Atlantic Forest in eastern Brazil. The Venezuelan, Grey-breasted and Pfrimer's Parakeets were formerly classed as subspecies of this bird but are increasingly treated as separate species.

White-crowned Parrot

The White-crowned Parrot (Pionus senilis), also known as the White-crowned Pionus in aviculture, is a small parrot which is a resident breeding species from eastern Mexico to western Panama.

It is found in lowlands and foothills locally up to 1600 m altitude in forest canopy and edges, and adjacent semi-open woodland and second growth. The 3-6 white eggs are laid in an unlined nest, usually a natural cavity in a tree or a hollow palm stub.

Taxonomy

The Western Corella was formerly considered either a subspecies of the Little Corella or the Long-billed Corella, before being recognised as a full species. There are two subspecies:

Western Rosella

The Western Rosella (Platycercus icterotis) less commonly known as the Stanley Rosella, Earl of Derby's parakeet or Yellow-cheeked parakeet, is the smallest species of rosella and is found in the South West of Australia.in Eucalypt forests and timbered areas. These are smallish parrots measuring 25–30 cm (9.8–12 in) in length and weighing from 28 to 80 g (0.99 to 2.8 oz), with an average of 63.3 g (2.23 oz). they are red from the head to the breast with white or beige-ish yellow cheeks and blue and green patterned wings with males being slightly larger and having a more vibrant yellow cheek colouring. Their bills are a grey 'horn' colour like most Australian parrots.

The Violet-necked Lory (Eos squamata) is a species of parrot in the Psittaculidae family. It is endemic to Indonesia. Its natural habitats are tropical moist lowland forests and tropical mangrove forests.

The Vernal Hanging Parrot (Loriculus vernalis) is a small parrot which is a resident breeder from India, Nepal and some other areas of Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, it is replaced by the very similar endemic Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, (L. beryllinus). It undergoes local movements, driven mainly by the availability of the fruit, seeds, buds and blossoms that make up its diet. They frequent the Banyan tree for the fruit and Plantain trees for the nectar from the flowers.

Vernal Hanging Parrot is a bird of dry jungle and cultivation. It nests in holes in trees, laying 2-4 white eggs.

This is a small, mainly green hanging parrot, only 14 cm long with a short tail. The adult male has a red rump and bill, and blue throat patch. The female has a green patch.

Immature birds have a duller rump, and lack the throat patch.

Vernal Hanging Parrot is less gregarious than some of its relatives, and is usually in small groups outside the breeding season. Its flight is swift and direct, and the call is a raucous chattering.

Description

The Varied Lorikeet is 19 cm (7.5 in) long. It is mainly green with short yellow longitudinal streaks. The lores, forehead, and crown are red. The beak is red, the bare eye-rings are white, the lores are bare, and the irises are orange-yellow. The upper breast is mauve with longitudinal yellow streaks. The legs are bluish-grey. In the female the red on the head is less extensive, and the breast has duller colours. Juveniles are much duller and are mainly green with an orange forehead, pale-brown irises, and a brown beak that is orange at the base.

The Turquoise Parrot (Neophema pulchella) is a parrot previously widespread in Eastern Australia, though now mainly found in northeastern New South Wales and north-eastern Victoria.
A small parrot at around 20 cm long, the male is predominantly green in colour and more yellowish below with a bright turquoise blue face and chestnut shoulders on the blue and green wings. Females are generally duller and paler and lack the chestnut wing patch.

It is found in grasslands and open woodlands, and feeds on grasses, seeds and nectar.

Tui Parakeet

The Tui Parakeet (Brotogeris sanctithomae) is a species of bird in the Psittacidae family, the true parrots. It is found in the Amazon Basin of Brazil, and Amazonian Peru and Bolivia; also a minor range into eastern Ecuador, and the river border of far south-eastern Colombia.

It is restricted to várzea and other wooded habitats near water. It is rare or entirely absent away from large rivers.

Tucumán Amazon

The Tucumán Amazon (Amazona tucumana) is a medium-sized species of parrot in the Psittacidae family. It is mainly green and has red at the front of its head above its pale beak. It is found in woodland (especially with Alnus acuminata or Podocarpus parlatorei) in the Yungas of Argentina and Bolivia. It is threatened by habitat loss and capture for the parrot trade.

Thick-billed Parrot

The Thick-billed Parrot, Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha is an endangered, medium-sized, up to 38 cm long, bright green parrot with a large black bill and a red forecrown, shoulder and thighs. It is found in Mexico, and its former range extended marginally into the United States.

Description

The Thick-billed Parrot is a medium-sized, up to 38 cm (15 in) long, bright green parrot with a large black bill and a red forecrown, shoulder and thighs. Adult eyes are amber, while juveniles have brown eyes. The rest of the bird is bright green. Thick-billed Parrots show red shoulders and leading edge on the underwing, followed by a blackish green stripe, then a yellow stripe, followed by the remaining underwing showing dark green. It appears to show a blackish tail.

The Swift Parrot is endangered with only about 1000 pairs remaining in the wild, and its population is declining.

Description

The Swift Parrot is about 25 cm (10 in) long and has long pointed wings and long tapering tail feathers. It is mainly green with bluish crown and red on the face above and below the beak. The adult female is slightly duller, and the juvenile has a dark brown iris and a pale orange bill.

The Superb Parrot (Polytelis swainsonii), also known as Barraband's Parrot, Barraband's Parakeet, or Green Leek Parrot, is a parrot native to south-eastern Australia. It is a monomorphic species and one of three species in the genus Polytelis.

The Superb Parrot is mostly bright green with darker flight feathers and is about 40 cm (16 in) long with a long pointed tail. Adult males have continuous yellow foreheads and throats, with a red horizontal band across the border of the throat.

Sulphur-winged Parakeet

Description

The Sulphur-winged Parakeet is 23 cm long and weighs 75 g. The adult is mainly green. Scaled with orange-yellow on the head and chest. There is a red spot on the auriculars and the tail is broadly tipped dull red (entirely dull red from below). The outer primaries are blue, but the most obvious feature in flight is the extensive yellow on the inner wing. Young birds are similar to the adults, but duller and with much less yellow in the wing.

The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) is a relatively large white cockatoo found in wooded habitats in Australia and New Guinea. They can be locally very numerous, leading to them sometimes being considered pests. They are well known in aviculture, although they can be demanding pets.

Distribution

In Australia, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos can be found widely in the north and east, ranging as far south as Tasmania, but avoiding arid inland areas with few trees. They are numerous in suburban habitats in cities such as Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane. Except for highland areas, they occur throughout most of New Guinea and on nearby smaller islands such as Waigeo, Misool and Aru, and various islands in the Cenderawasih Bay and Milne Bay.

Description

40 cm (16 in) long, mostly green, multi-colored amazon parrot with a yellowish white, blue and green head, greenish-bronze upperparts, grey feet, reddish eye, and violet blue-green wings. Its tail feathers are blue with broad yellow tips. There is a less yellow-brown morph and a less common green morph. It has grey feet and reddish eyes. Both sexes are similar. The young has lighter plumage and brown iris.

Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. It is threatened by habitat loss. The species had declined from around 1000 birds in the 1950s to 150 birds in the late 1970s. At that point a conservation program began to save the species, which galvanised popular support to save the species, and by 1990 the species had increased to 350 birds.Although the population in Saint Lucia is small it is still expanding.
